Will Smith, Audible, and Wondery have announced the arrival of a new limited Hip-Hop podcast, Class Of ’88. Smith had been selected to host the new series to celebrate the pivotal year “that defined the global cultural phenomenon of Hip-Hop.”
In a statement, the West Philly native stated, “Hip-Hop has been a central part of my life for over four decades. I’m hyped to share my first-hand experiences and those of some of Hip-Hop’s greatest legends as we delve into the origins of one of the most influential genres of music in history.”
As described from Audible, the podcast is about the “12 months [that] gave rise to the superstars and styles that continue to mark music today.”
Listeners will be guided through the milestone year with the help of Smith’s perspective and personal experiences as well as archival information plus in-depth interviews from those who helped shape the genre like Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Rakim, Fab 5 Freddy, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Chuck D, and DJ Red Alert.
In the official trailer, the Fresh Prince narrates, “Today, Hip-Hop dominates pop culture, but it wasn’t always like that. Before 1988, a lot of people saw our music as just a passing fad… And to tell the story of how that changed, I wanna take you back to a very special year in rap.”
Latifah chimes, “In ’88, it was too much good music. The world was on fire.”
All eight episodes of Class Of ’88 will premiere on Oct. 26, exclusively on Amazon Music and Audible.
