SNL veteran John Mulaney's personal life has been on quite the rollercoaster! After a rocky bout with alcohol and drug addiction during the pandemic, Mulaney voluntarily checked himself into rehab in late 2020.

Just weeks after his rehab stint, reports emerged that the comedian and his wife of six years, Anna Marie Tendler, were getting a divorce. Mere months later, the SNL alum struck up a romance with X-Men star Olivia Munn, and was soon expecting his first child.

However, things didn't turn out quite as well for his ex-wife, who was going through an emotionally turbulent time of her own when Mulaney filed for divorce. So, what exactly happened to Tendler in the aftermath of her divorce from Mulaney, and did she truly retreat from public life and isolate herself after the split?

What Happened Between Anna Marie Tendler And John Mulaney That Led To Their Divorce?

John Mulaney became the subject of intense media attention in late 2020, when reports emerged that he’d voluntarily checked into rehab following a protracted battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

Mulaney’s personal life remained in the headlines months after he’d left rehab, owing to a series of events that started with him divorcing his wife of six years, Anna Marie Tendler, and ended with him welcoming his first child with actress Olivia Munn.

“I packed a lot into this [year],” the comedian shared during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife. Then in the spring I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia. … And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news! Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery.”

While neither Mulaney nor Tendler have spoken out on what led to their divorce, inside sources claim that Mulaney might’ve been unfaithful.

“John really suffered through lockdown last year. Anna Marie moved to Washington, DC, to work at the Smithsonian on a project and he was back in NYC and out of control,” a source close to the former couple revealed to Page Six. “He was DM’ing women on Instagram for hookups — whether he went through with anything, we don’t know — and by December he’d fallen off the wagon again and was abusing drugs and alcohol."

Anna Marie Tendler Was Heartbroken When John Mulaney Ended Their Six-Year Marriage

Despite the alleged cracks in their relationship, Anna Marie Tendler was devastated when John Mulaney filed for divorce.

“John was using Anna Marie to protect himself,” a source close to the 38-year-old multimedia artist revealed to Page Six. “But still, she was very heartbroken that he decided to end her marriage, she was heartbroken how it went down, it wasn’t something that she wanted, she wanted to work it out. I am sure this news about the pregnancy will be very difficult for her.”

Reeling from the abrupt end of her marriage, Tendler also checked herself into rehab, albeit not for the same reasons as Mulaney.

“Anna Marie was in rehab at Silver Hill for [emotional]… and eating disorders,” a source revealed to AJ Benza’s Fame, Ain’t It A B**ch podcast. “She didn’t talk at all about that, we were all on our own journey of recovery. But it is clear she suffered during their marriage.”

John Mulaney may have taken things too far on SNL, particularly from Mick Jagger's standpoint.

Tendler would open up about the emotional upheaval she experienced in the wake of her divorce from John Mulaney in a poignant New Year’s Eve Instagram post.

“Melancholia is oft amplified by circumstance and the circumstances of my year have been harsh and punishing,” she wrote in December 2021. “I find myself asking, ‘when will I feel normal?’ but in reality I recognize that the normal from before has expired; ‘normal’ is an impossibility, there is only ‘new.'”

Anna Marie Tendler Moved Off The Grid After Her Divorce From John Mulaney

With her marriage rapidly unraveling, and Mulaney having packed out of their shared home, Anna Marie Tendler made a rather drastic change in her life. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the 38-year-old relocated from her New York West Village apartment to a 19th-century stone house in the Connecticut Woodlands, completely isolating herself from friends and family.

“I do miss my friends, and I am aware that I’m maybe a little too young to be living in the middle of the woods by myself,” she told Harper’s Bazaar of her unconventional living arrangements in January 2022.

In her poignant essay for Elle, Tendler revealed that her now-deceased French bulldog, Petunia, was her sole companion during this turbulent time.

“Petunia and I moved to Connecticut in December 2020, in the wake of my severe mental health breakdown and what appeared to be the impending end of my marriage,” she wrote. “We fused even more deeply together in an attuned and totally symbiotic relationship. She never let me out of her sight.”

Months after the move, Tendler’s emotional health took a turn for the worst, leading her to seek treatment for depression, self-harm, among other things.

“My mental health hinged wholly on my dog,” she shared in her essay for Elle. “When I was hospitalized for depression, self-harm, and severe suicidal ideation in the first two weeks of 2021, the doctors asked me to make a list of my reasons for living. Petunia was the one and only thing on that list.”
