The bizarre circumstances surrounding the Chargers’ abrupt quarterback change on Sunday have been revealed.

ESPN.com reports that Los Angeles’ team doctor accidentally punctured Tyrod Taylor’s lung while trying to administer a pain-killing injection to his cracked ribs before the Chargers’ game against the Chiefs.

Rookie Justin Herbert filled in, and played admirably, completing 22-of-33 passes for 311 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the overtime loss. Chargers coach Anthony Lynn has said Taylor would remain the starter, though it is expected Herbert will play this Sunday against the Panthers as the veteran continues to recover. Taylor has been advised by doctors not to play “indefinitely,” according to ESPN.

“Prior to kick off, Tyrod Taylor experienced difficulty breathing and was taken to the locker room for evaluation. He was transported to the hospital shortly thereafter to undergo further evaluation,” the team previously said in a statement describing Taylor’s ordeal.

“Taylor (chest) has since been discharged from the hospital. His status for next Sunday’s game will be determined later in the week.”

The NFLPA is investigating the incident to determine if it needs to take any further steps, ESPN reported.
