Ugh-ly. Today show cohost Savannah Guthrie asked Penélope Cruz about her so-called “ugly feet” during a sit-down chat on Wednesday, February 10 — and things got awkward.
The interview started off fine, with Guthrie, 44, asking Cruz, 41, about how she landed the role in the widely anticipated Zoolander 2. The Oscar-winning actress revealed that she was on a diaper run (she and husband Javier Bardem are parents of daughter Luna, 2, and son Leo, 5) when she got a call from Ben Stiller offering her the role of a secret agent working for Interpol.
After an amiable chat about Cruz’s love of animals and more, Guthrie broached an unusual subject.
“I think you said it, despite what you look like, you have ugly feet,” Guthrie remarked to her guest.
“No, no, no, no,” Cruz, suddenly taken aback, replied. “I haven’t said that. I’m OK. I’m OK with my feet.”
“OK, good!” Guthrie replied. “Because you were a dancer.”
“Yeah, because, you know, when you’re a ballet dancer, you lose your toenails,” Cruz elaborated. “You get used to throwing them away. You don’t even feel them anymore. I’m OK.”
