Candace’s paternal ancestry can be traced back to Francis Bushnell, one of the signatories of the ‘Guilford Covenant’, a covenant signed by the English colonists as the founding document of Quinnipiac (modern New Haven, a city in Connecticut) in June 1639. Francis had emigrated from Thatcham, Berkshire, England, in 1639.Her father was one of the inventors of the air-cooled hydrogen fuel cell (an electrochemical cell that converts the chemical energy of hydrogen and an oxidizing agent into electricity) that was used in the Apollo space missions in the 1960s.During her high school days in Glastonbury, Connecticut, she was accompanied to her senior prom by Mike O’Meara who went on to become a nationally syndicated radio host. Mike, later, also dated one of Candace’s younger sisters. When she was about 19 years old, Candace moved to New York City where she sold a children’s story to Simon & Schuster, a renowned American publishing company. It was never published, though.Thereafter, she worked as a freelance journalist, writing darkly humorous pieces about women, relationships, and dating for publications such as Mademoiselle, Self Magazine, and Esquire. In 1990, she wrote a column called The Human Cartoon, a fictional serial published in Hamptons Magazine. It would become a precursor for S*x and the City, her life-changing newspaper column (1994–1996) in The New York Observer for whom she began writing in 1993.In 2005, Candace served as one of the judges on a competitive reality TV show titled Wickedly Perfect. From 2005 until 2016, she used to own a historic Victorian farmhouse in Roxbury, a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut. In October 2006, she began hosting a live weekly talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio titled S*x, Success, and Sensibility.
