  • After his time at Skerry’s College in Dublin, he started working in the civil service. He became a junior clerk at the Dublin Board of Trade in 1911 and later worked for the unemployment office. He later stated, “It was an easy job, full of leisure”.
  • Along with Bing Crosby, Frank McHugh, James Brown, Jean Heather, Gene Lockhart, Porter Hall, Fortunio Bonanova, and Risë Stevens, Barry Fitzgerald co-starred as Father Fitzgibbon in the 1944 American musical comedy-drama film Going My Way. This role won Fitzgerald several accolades including the Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor”, Golden Globe Award for “Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture”, and New York Film Critics Circle Award for “Best Actor” while he was also nominated for Academy Award for “Best Actor”.
  • Alongside Cary Grant, Ethel Barrymore, June Duprez, Jane Wyatt, George Coulouris, and Dan Duryea, Barry Fitzgerald co-starred as Henry Twite in the American drama romance film None but the Lonely Heart in 1944.
