NBA retiree Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union were not playing around when they recited their vows about six years ago. The two are one of the most famous couples on the internet right now.

They recently opened up about what makes their marriage work so well. On a cover story featured on People, Wade stated that it is all about working on it. He believes that learning about each other will go a long way in avoiding some problems.

Meanwhile, Union candidly referred to their past marriages and declared they did not do it right— a mistake they have sworn not to make this time around.

She urged partners to be more "collaborative, equitable, and humble." Wade also pointed out how he supports Union for who she is without changing her to fit some standard of his.

WHEN THE ENGINE GETS CLOGGED

Like any couple worth their salt, Wade and Union have been through their fair share of ups and downs. It has helped them perfect the art of communication, and they employ it in problem-solving.

The way Wade put it, they know when to present tough love and when to offer comfort. It doesn't mean they are perfect like he said; it just means they have "got a good combination of it all."

The kids once tried to get their mother to quit her job and stay home with them.

THE TIES THAT BIND

Wade loves his wife for various reasons, many of which ensure that they get along splendidly. He once listed some of those reasons to People.

One of them is that she lets him live his life without attempting to change him. He added that she works just as hard as he does but still finds time to spend with him and the kids.

GETTING BOUND… VOLUNTARILY

Wade and Union's love story is something of a fairy tale in these modern times. Their relationship can be traced back to 2007 when they first met while co-hosting a sponsored Super Bowl party.

At the time, Union had just gotten out of a five-year marriage with Chris Howard while Wade was still married to Siohvaughn Funches— they later separated, and he filed for divorce in June 2007.

Their divorce was finalized in June 2010, and Wade started appearing publicly with Union one month later. It prompted backlash from netizens and a court case from Funches herself, but Union fought it and won.

They tied the knot on August 30, 2014, and Union became stepmother to his three children, Zaya and Zaire, whom he shares with Funches, and a kid named Xavier— the product of his relationship with Aja Montoya.

Wade and Union welcomed their child via surrogacy, and they named her Kaavia. The bond the family shares is a deep one— so deep the kids once tried to get their mother to quit her job and stay home with them like they had seen other families do.

Union had to explain that she only works because she enjoys it, not because she doesn't love being their mother. She will do her best to be there for them as much as possible while doing what she loves— a sentiment anyone can get behind.
